Intro to Camera & Health and Safety Tutorial

Equipment summary

This would be the most important piece of equipment as without it we wouldn't be able to film, in the lesson we got shown on how to do things such as:

  • focus
  • zoom
  • playback footage
  • record

A piece of equipment that lets you keep the camera perfectly steady for filming and lets you capture a range of shots that would be hard to capture with it being used hand held

Lesson summary

During this lesson we had received an introduction of the cameras for the first time, this would teach us with how to handle camera's using care for example keeping the camera dry at all times so if in rain use an umbrella also to close the lens when we have finished filming, and how to use them this would mean doing things like: switching them on and off, changing the focus and how to put the camera on the tripod.
handling the camera is very important to know, because it teaches me to be able to avoid a bad scenario happening, For instance if we did not know how to put the camera on the tripod then there is a big chance that the camera will fall and break on the floor which we would not want happening.
later that lesson we got told that we had to write our first story board for our first piece of filming footage the 'bag swap'.

Location shots

This is the location of where we shot our opening for the thriller. We used a classroom but we changed the scene and used props to not make it look like a classroom. We also added lighting and spotlights to add effect and help give it the weird look we aspired to achieve.

Fonts

There are really two types of fonts that are used.

  • Serif fonts

  • Sans serif fonts

Serif fonts- these fonts are generally what you would use if you wanted to be formal in a letter for instants. They seem more traditional to me and much more serious.

Sans serif fonts- theses fonts are a little laid back compared to Serif fonts, in contrast they are much more informal and you can use these type of fonts when writing to a friend or designing something playfull.

Skills Audit: Livetype & soundtrack & PITCH

We had to make a short sequence immitating the briefcase swap in collateral. to edit all of this we had to use Final cut pro.

Live type allows you to add Text, objects, effect to add to anything film that you make, to give it that proffesional look.

Soundtrack allows you to make sountracks whether it be, footsteps, clapping, screaming, by this you can also add insound effects to add tension to it.

Location shots

This is the location of where we shot our opening for the thriller. We used a classroom but then in the making of our thriller we made it look like we were at another place so it didnt look like an ordinary class room. We also added lighting and spotlights to add effect to it all.

Art of the Title Sequence

I chose this thriller sequence title because I thought it was the most effective and relevant to our film. It has a lot of abstract pictures and in between it has the titles. Just like the opening of our thriller film most of the objects and pictures shown just seem random and it is hard to figure out what the film is going to be about until right at the end when the title is shown, The opening leaves a lot to the imagination and it makes you want to watch the rest of the film and figure out what all the images and pictures were about. The font is Gothic and weird like our film and it complements the theme of the film well.

News and current affairs events

London's Most Wanted: Convicted killers on the run

'This is the face of one of London's Most Wanted criminals who is suspected of having fled the UK to Amsterdam'

This would make an amazingly gripping thriller i used well, it could be similar to the popular episodes of 'prison break' which now doesn't air anymore but was a huge hit with many seasons. the film could be gripping from beginning to end perhaps starting with them running through the prison escaping as flash's of whats to come? and then going back to how the escape all began. they could be found out within the first hour and given a close chase by the guards! Along the way they have flashbacks or stories of how they all got there which could be moving and make this film epic, maybe they were all in their for a crime they did not commit to begin with? this would build tension well as the viewer would be intrigued and begin to show sympathy for these convicts as they want to see what happens next and who gets caught also who escapes!. finally those that have escaped could find a way to reach a new country (Amsterdam as show above) to start a new life safe from hiding.

Photo 'words' activity

Claustrophobia is being portrayed here, this is someone who is scared of closed confined spaces, this picture shows this persons anxiety and distress we can tell this by his facial expression and how his hand are placed, it seems as though he just wants to escape as he is trying to push the ceiling up. furthermore we can see him but yet there still is no escape for him thisis powerful because it shows him in a vunerable state.

Analysis of a thriller clip

deja-vu-1-1024.jpg

We also watched the short clip of the action thriller Deja Vu, this clip was action packed with suspense and action. In the clip there was lots of upbeat, fast tempo music to create suspense, this film is about an agent who goes back in time to try and save a woman's life preventing her from getting murdered, from the clip we get a sense of him falling for her during the process. Just like most other thrillers the film starts with a very normal setting but with a tense atmosphere, happy children, people laughing, then we see a baby doll drop into the sea, This gives the viewer a sense of for-boding and anxiety it also sets the mood and begins to raise tension. At that point we see a man looking for a source of music and where it is coming from, he searches around franticly pacing through cars to find where the sound is coming from, he sees a car with the radio playing and the keys are plugged into the ignition, immediately there is a sense of tension and anxiety with the upbeat music, all of a sudden an explosion occurs, this is a great opening as it leaves the viewer wanting to know why that happened and what happens next making them watch on.

Intro to Cameras & Health and Safety tutorial

in this lesson we had gotten an introduction to the cameras for the first time, this would help us with how to handle camera's in care, how to switch them on and off, how to change focus and how to put the camera on the tripod.

To me it is very important to know how to handle camera, because i know in any situation anything is likely to happen. For instance if we did not know how to put the camera on the tripod then there is a big chance that the camera will fall and break on the floor which we would not want happening.

later that lesson we got told that we had to write a story board which would then turn into us doing a 'Bag swap' sequence.

List of thriller sub-genres- which inspires you at the moment and why?

IST thriller_movie01.jpg

Some say thriller and the first thing that comes to mind is a psycho with a knife killing everyone but in reality there is several different kinds of thrillers some of these are.

Techno thriller

Spy thriller

Pyschological thriller

Medical thriller

Horror thriller

Disaster thriller

Religiouse thriller

Drama thriller

Action thriller

Crime thriller

My favorite one in the list would be a crime thriller this is because it provides the sense of mystery which i love in a movie, and climax's are some of the best in crime thrillers, that also have the best twists in the story.

Skills Audit-Editing

To help me create my own video i had to practice how to make a sequence in a video clip. I had to open final cut pro-bait clips and from there i had to select certain clips that i wanted and then I played it and then i pressed I which stands for input to play where i wanted the clip to play from then i pressed O which stands for output for where i wanted the clip to stop. I dragged these clips onto the timeline and then played it. I also learned how to use the razor tool which enabled me to cut out any other clips that i did not want in the final movie.

Man arrested after teenager shot in Newport

This would help with a new idea of a thriller because it relates to scary creepy issues that may help to create suspense. This current affair is to do with a 50 year old man attempting to murder after he shot a teenager boy in newport. In a thriller i think you should be able to add something like this because it has a story that would relate to what has happened.

As media skills - audit editing

To help understand the concept of editing film in class we were told to open Final cut pro - Bait tutorial.
From there we opened up a file that gave us several clips in the browser, we used the I in and the O key to show outpoints in where we wanted it to be edited.
In order to make the sequence we dragged the clips onto the timeline so the clips could connect and begin to make sense.
I also learned to use the razor tool, the razor tool would enable us to cut out what we didn't want to add in the sequence.

As well as everything, i learnt to put in a cross fade effect on the video and add additional audio such as tension building music in the background (non-diagetic).
