The thriller we watched as a class was united 93. Now in many ways i was disapointed with this as a thriller as it took a while to get going and to the point but was based on true events so there was a reason...

the film used many techniques to build tension and suspence, one of these would be sound. before a big event in the film sound is used to subconsciously build tension and gets the viewer ready for a shock this was not one of united 93's strong points in my opinion but when used effectivly it was pulled of very well, for example as the first plane was being taken over by terrorists and discovered there is a non-diagetic erie sound to slowly raise tension and always a diagetic sound of the radar that is used by the man at the same time this gives the viewer a sence of foreboding that something bad is going to happen with that radar.
another way suspence is built is by camera shots, for example when there is no action or right before there is a build up to action you would see the camera moving very slowly and it would be very steady this would be on a tri-pod but as action moves closer the camera shots begin to speed up slowly and it begins to become more handheld this is telling the viewer that something is about to go down! another way the film builds tension is using close ups on peoples faces, the film uses this very effectivley as it captures the fear very well.
towards the climax of the film we see the passangers fight for there lives. the camera is hand and shaking everywhere while there is a fast paced non-diagetic sound playing in the background, as they get closer to the cabin door there is several slow close ups on the terrorists faces to show the fear as they are alomost out of time. the struggle for the weal of the plane has everyone on the edge of their seat as we want the cavilians to survive which is the obvious good triumph evil, the camera work and sound in that scene ae used very well but in this case evil triumphes as we are end up with the plane crashing.
